Today I want to talk about all the essential items that you should include on your baby registry list. I know how scary and overwhelming it can be when you’re going down the aisles in Babies’R’Us, Right Start, Pottery Barn Kids etc. and trying to figure out what you need, what you don’t, and what’s just a waste of your money when it comes to baby products. Therefore, I have created a detailed list mapping out 5 categories – Feeding, Diapering, Sleeping, Traveling and Misc. Must-Haves – all of which you will need before baby comes!
Breast Pump: If you plan to breastfeed you will definitely need a breast pump. Nowadays Breast pumps are covered by most insurance companies under the ACA(Affordable Care Act). Here is an easy link that I personally ordered my breast pump from. This website www.edgepark.com will direct you to an easy 3 step process that will help you determine if your insurance covers the breast pump that you selected from their list. Once you complete all 3 steps your information will be sent out to your doctor and insurance company for approval, once they approve your prescription for the breast pump, Edge Park will then ship the breast pump to your home. Now how cool is that! Everyone loves convenience, am i right!? The breast pump that I recommend is the Medela Pump in Style®Advanced Breast Pump, as almost all hospitals use this brand. During your stay at the hospital, most hospitals provide you with free pumping supplies that only fits the Medela Breast Pump. So thats why i would recommend the Medela Breast Pump.
Nursing Pillow: I personally recommend the Boppy Heirloom Pillow as it gives your arms and back a break during while feeding. This pillow elevates your little one into position for either bottle or breastfeeding, and as your little one gets bigger, it transitions into a great support pillow for propping, tummy time, and learning to sit up right. The pillow is also machine washable.
Hands-Free Pumping Bra: If you have a breast pump, you will need a Hands Free Pumping Bra. This hands-free bra will hold the pumps in place while you pump. This bra is very helpful especially for moms who are planning on going back to work, or moms that just need to be able to work on things around the house.
Nipple Cream: I hear nursing is painful for the first few weeks. So my lactation specialist and doctor both recommend to use Lansinoh HPA Lanolin. From what I’ve researched, Lanolin is extremely effective at soothing broken skin, through a process called moist wound healing. It allows a barrier protection to the nerve endings which cause the pain while allowing your wounds to heal without scabs. In addition, lanolin is a natural pure unscented product which does not need to be removed before nursing your baby. (Please keep in mind some people may have allergies to this product, so be sure to look at the ingredients before use – i wouldn’t recommend this product for people that have wool allergies).
Nipple Shield: This helps with latch-on challenges for flat or inverted nipples, tongue/lip tie, and overactive let-downs. It also helps give nursing mommies with sore/chapped nipples a little break to heal, yet still allow you to nurse your little one.
Nursing Pads : You should definitely without a doubt register for disposable nursing pads, because lets face it, the thought of milk leaking all over your clothes is messy and can be a tad embarrassing if you get caught in public.
Bottles: Even if you plan to nurse, you will still need bottles for when you pump. These Dr Brown’s BPA-Free 4 Ounce Bottles are great for newborns, because it helps preserve nutrients, including vitamins C, A, E and lipids, by reducing air bubble oxidation that will cause painful gas bubbles in your little ones tummy.
Gas Relief Drops: These drops help relieve that upset stomach pain and pressure that gas causes, according to the product reviews this product is safe for newborn babies. Since newborn babies get super gassy it is important to have the gas drops on hand so you can make your little one feel better faster.
Bottle Warmer: Dr. Brown’s Deluxe Bottle Warmer Electric Steam Warming System is easy to use and quickly warms your baby bottles and/or food jars.
Bottle Cleaner: You will be cleaning lots of bottles, so i would recommend registering for a countertop drying rack, bottle brush cleaner, and a baby safe dish soap and I would also register for the Dr. Brown’s Deluxe Electric Bottle Steam Sterilizer System (this product you don’t really need, since you can boil your bottles in water over the stove, but this product is nice to have.. So i’d say heck, why not register for it!)
Milk Storage: I would say get the Medela Breastmilk Storage Solution as it comes with a variety of storages that help you store your breast milk smartly and safely. This set also allows you to label/keep track of the date your milk was pumped. Also this set is compatible with almost all Medela breast pumps.
Diapers: I’ve heard the Honest Company is amazing, but the only thing is they’re a bit pricey. So I would either suggest Pampers Swaddlers Newborn Sensitive Diapers Super Pack and/or Up & Up™ Diapers Super Pack from Target for less expensive diapers that still get the job done – according to the reviews.
Wipes: I’ve heard you’ll go through wipes like crazy, so making sure you’re prepared is an absolute must! The Pampers Sensitive Wipes was awarded the 2015 Moms Love It award so thats why I would suggest these for your little one.
Wipe Warmer: This keep your baby’s wipes warm and handy. This is a top item on baby registries according to my research.
Diaper Cream: I’ve her the Dr. Brown’s Daily Diaper Cream and/or Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Diaper Rash Ointment are the best of the best according to all the product reviews compared to other diaper creams.
Diaper Dispenser: The Ubbi diaper pail is the best on the market (according to the reviews). It locks in harsh smelling orders, and is easy to use, empty, and clean. You can also use any standard tall kitchen trash bags or the Ubbi Plastic Bags to refill.
Changing Table: This is a must have! Laying your little one on the couch or floor just doesn’t sound comfortable, you want something that’s safe, easy, and at a practical level for you while you change your baby. I have this Truly Scrumptious by Heidi Klum Changing Dresser Topper along with the Truly Scrumptious by Heidi Klum 7 Drawer Dresser and I absolutely love it!
Changing Pad: The Serta Perfect Sleeper Contour Changing Pad is designed to fit most dressers and/or standard changing tables, it also has a nonskid material on the bottom to ensure it stays in place without moving around. In addition, it has a safety strap (with an easy release buckle) for your little ones safety while your changing their diaper.
Changing Pad Cover: I would recommend the Babies R Us Plush Changing Pad Cover. It fits perfectly over your changing pad, it’s super soft, and comes in a variety of different colors. It is also machine washable.
Bassinet: I got the HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper – Silver Harmony Circles as a gift from my baby shower. This bassinet is amazing and has so many cool things about it. First of all, it keeps your baby right next to you and provides your little one with a separate sleeping area, while eliminating the risk of sharing a bed. You can also adjust the base of the bassinet to fit your bed size height, it can fit within tight spaces too. It has a 360° swivel motion that lets you maneuver/position your baby right next to your bed, it also makes it easy for when you have to get in and out of bed. The sides of the bassinet has a 360° see-through/breathable mesh wall. I love this because you can still see your baby at any angle or level. The front side wall lowers down and returns back up automatically, so you can stay in bed while nursing or tending to your child. This bassinet also offers your choice of soothing sounds, lullabies, and soothing vibrations to help your little one drift off to sleep. There is also a convenient night light that makes tending to your baby in the dark safe and easy.
Crib: The crib we got was the Truly Scrumptious by Heidi Klum 4-in-1 Convertible Crib. I personally am obsessed with the make and style of this crib! I also love the fact that if offers (with purchase) the bed convertible adjustment accommodations for your growing baby.
Bedding: Since the theme of my nursery is elephants and giraffes (gray, white, & light blue) I decided to register with Pottery Barn Kids for bedding, as I personally feel there crib bedding is not only cute, but it’s also made of only pure organic cotton.
Nursery Rock Chair & Ottomans: Since you spend so much time nursing your little one, it is important to invest in a nice and comfy chair to sit and power nap in while you nurse. I personally like this one from Pottery Barn Kids and/or this less expensive one – Baby Relax Hudson Wingback Rocker. The reason I like these specific chairs with the winged out sides is because you can rest your head against it with out straining your neck, if you plan to take a quick cat nap or wanna rest your eyes.
Swaddle Blankets: There are so many cute swaddle blankets and designs out there its hard to choose, but I like these that come in packs SwaddleMe 3-Pack and SwaddleMe Cursive Blue 3 Pack. I also like these soft & cozy ones SwaddleMe Lux Velboa.
PJ Onesies/Sleeping Sacks: I love these Carter’s Neutral Ivory Zip Up Microfleece Sleep Bag as it has a front facing zipper which is easy access to faster diaper changes in the middle of the night. I also love these adorable footie Baby Carter’s Elephant & Giraffe Sleep & Play, they’re just so cute and keeps your little one warm and cozy at night.
White Noise Machine: I follow a young lady named Jennifer Stano David on Snapchat, and she had recommend the Dohmie Serious Sleep Baby Bundle Sound Machine to her followers. She said it works wonders for her babies, and for her and her husband. She said it helps them drift off to sleep and keeps them from hearing any outside noises that might wake them up.
Pacifiers: I got these Dr. Brown’s PreVent Orthodontic Pacifier as a baby shower gift and I’m obsessed with the fact they glow-in-the-dark! Makes for an easy find. I also heard these Dr. Brown’s Newborn 2 Pack One Piece Silicone Pacifier were pretty good.
Humidifier: The Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier is not only adorable for a nursery, but it’s actually functional and a must have for your babies room. I live in Colorado and it is super dry here, so adding moisture for everyday comfort will help keep your little one healthy.
Car Seat: I’ve done many many many long hours of research on car seats and strollers.. and I finally found the perfect one! This PIPA™ by Nuna® Car Seat & Base is the BEST of the BEST! This ultra-light car seat combines style and safety in an innovative way for your little one. What I love most is that it comes with a click-it green indicator, as well as a dual-bubble level indicator that gives you reassurance that you installed it correctly. You literally can carry your entire life into this one bag lol it has all these compartments and comes with a cushioned changing pad.
Misc. Must- Haves:
Nasal Aspirator: You’re probably wondering what the heck is a Nosefrida lol, but trust me, you will most certainly need it and it’s worth the buy! It is the best product out there that will effectively and safely clean your little ones nostrils out.
Receiving Blankets: Are a must have! These Gerber 5-Pack Flannel Receiving Blankets help keep your little one bundled up nice & warm. They also are are great for a burp cloth, and/or for carrying in your stroller for when you’re out and about and it gets a little drifty, or if you need to clean up something with it. It’s multi-purposeful.
Baby-Safe Cleaning Products: These are essential to have in your house at all times! Hand Sanitizer, Baby Laundry Detergent, Dish Soap & Toy & High Chair Cleaner will help keep those germs away and your babies clothes clean!
Baby Tub: This Aquascale 3 in 1 Digital Scale, Water Thermometer, and Infant Tub is absolutely amazing! It is a bath tub that has two seated positions 1) for newborns and 2) for toddlers. It has a water thermometer that automatically monitors/displays the bath water temperature so you’re little is safe from cold/hot temperatures. It also has a digital scale that compensates for water and movement, it records the precise weight of your little one, and the scale conveniently stores your baby’s weight, so you can keep track of your child’s growth. Now how smart was this person who invented this 3 in 1 baby tub! Talk about Brilliant!
Bathtub Elbow Rest: This Skip Hop Moby Bathtub Elbow Rest provides a place to set your elbows on while you bathe your little one. It also has a water-resistant zippered pocket to store your phone or jewelry in.
Night Light/Room Thermometer: The Gro-Egg Room Thermometer serves as both a night light and a room thermometer, it changes colors to let you know whether your room is too cold, too hot, or just right. Since my little one is due in the middle of winter, it is important to me to make sure I maintain a safe and cozy environment for him.
Floor seat: One of my mama friends told me to register for the Mamas & Papas Baby Snug Floor Seat (she told me you won’t need it right away until they’re about 3 months or so, but she said it’s nice to register for it anyways.) It is amazing! It comes with a toy tray to keep your little one entertained, it also helps provide support and comfort for when they’re learning to sit up.
Pack’n’play: This Graco Pack ‘n Play Play is a multi-purpose must have! It not only keeps you close and connected with your little one, it is cozy & portable. The monitors that I received as gifts from my baby shower were the Summer Infant Baby Touch WiFi Internet Viewing Baby Monitor, and the Mimo Baby Monitor Starter Kit and I love them, and can’t wait to use them! I also came across this brilliant product about a week ago called the Owlet – lets just say whoever invented this product was a freakin genius! 🙂
Books: Instead of registering for baby books, I would highly recommend that you send out in your baby shower invitations a cute message asking your guests to bring a book instead of a card. There are so many cute and creative ways online to ask your guests – so that way you will have lots and lots of baby books to read to your little one in addition to all the adorable handwritten messages inside the book from your guests!
Well mommies & daddies-to-be, I hope that you found this post helpful and informative! I hope this gives you a clear idea as to what you should definitely register for!
